Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (“BJJ”) is the most effective of the martial arts for self defense. BJJ is equal parts sport, play, and self-defense – and 100 percent guaranteed to get you in the best shape of your life! BJJ came to be its own art through the practices of Carlos and Helio Gracie. Absent from BJJ are katas and standardized choreography commonly found in karate and other traditional martial arts. Instead, while core concepts make up much of BJJ, new techniques and ways of movement, attack, defense, and thinking are developed daily by those practicing it. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. No-gi grappling (or “submission wrestling”) is a general term for combat sports that focus on ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission using submission holds. In no-gi grappling, practitioners usually wear attire associated with surfing – specifically rash guards and board shorts. No-gi grapplers try to control an opponent by gripping the body’s natural handles: the neck, the wrist, the elbow, the knee, the hips, etc. The academy here features no-gi training by world champion instructors. BOXING AND KICKBOXING
We have TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED our boxing classes. Look for a return in Fall 2018 of this program. We use REAL professionals to teach REAL boxing and kickboxing. You will sweat and burn upwards of 600 calories a class, but these are not “follow-the-leader” classes here. Strap up, put on the gloves, and get ready to let your hands go! Our classes are motivational and they’ll add speed, power, and focus to your jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and kicks. Work on that footwork and cardio. Newcomer to the sport? Not a natural athlete?
